Arsenal's Controversial Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Set to End This Coming Year

Arsenal Football Club has declared that its disputed sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will expire in the coming June.

Background and Scrutiny

This deal, said to be worth around ten million pounds each year, was initiated six years ago and has since faced significant scrutiny.

Such scrutiny arises from accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 forces in continuing hostilities in the eastern areas of the adjacent DRC.

Earlier this year, Arsenal was criticized for committing a disrespectful act to the Congolese government by failing to convene with Congolese diplomat ThérÚse Wagner to discuss the partnership.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda operates as an arm of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a state institution.

It is widely believed that Arsenal entered into and maintained this partnership chiefly to increase their fanbase in Africa.

Nonetheless, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “mutually agreed” to part ways.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have outperformed the initial objectives of the partnership – advocating preservation and responsible tourism, motivating countless fans to discover the country, and building a solid groundwork for travel industry expansion,” stated an official Arsenal statement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's objective to emerge as an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and stage additional international competitions while executing grassroots football initiatives that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches develop their skills and inspire greater participation in sports throughout the nation.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, characterized the deal as a “significant journey” and claimed it had been “advancing” the club's ambitions.

But that is not how a section of Arsenal's fanbase, with the activist organization Gunners Supporting Peace demonstrating outside the club's home ground during the initial Champions League semi-final match against the French club in late April.

Activists unveiled a sign stating “End the Rwanda Deal” and provided wristbands to conceal the Rwanda branding on uniforms.

Industry Perspective and Fellow Clubs

Around that time, the French champions renewed their partnership deal with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

At the same time, the Madrid-based team inked a recent contract for the same period that has resulted in the emblem appearing on the Spanish club's male and female kits.
