Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a fresh playlist titled Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode resembles the standard Breakthrough setup but includes a few key changes:
In short, this mode delivers on its title: it offers a laid-back version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume there's nothing wrong, as it gives more options for gamers seeking different ways to have fun with the game. But, if video games have taught us anything, it's that not everyone will be happy. In other words, a lot of BF6 players are upset.
"People want human opponents. Avoid making the errors of your rivals," reads a response to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing concept," says a different user. Meanwhile, in community forums, one user remarks, "I have no idea where we are going with this game," while another details everything they consider to be broken in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."
On the other hand, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's very fun to practice, real players prevent it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," reads one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this game all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," states a different comment. One reply via social media clarifies that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is perfect for me," while someone else applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Despite the support, there are valid points to criticize Casual Breakthrough. Some users have pointed out that it will make wait times more extended for other modes because of the sheer number of options in the game already. Similarly, certain regions already encounter mostly bots in the current modes. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of human gamers, even though it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide full XP, even against bots, but that was removed when they tried to remove XP farming from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough feels like the player base compromising halfway, according to forum feedback. Another labels this mode as the developers "dropping the ball so hard, I experienced great enjoyment in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to change it?"
If the development team has demonstrated something to date with Battlefield 6, it's that they're paying attention and responding to player input. Assignments being too difficult got fixed very quickly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, should analytics shows this new playlist is underperforming to their expectations, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
