Bushfires Ravage WA as Temperatures Skyrocket

Scorching conditions and intense bushfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures expected to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major alert for extreme heat has been issued across a large portion of the southwestern region.

Broad Heatwave Alerts Throughout Multiple States

These conditions come after this month's fires in another state, which caused the destruction of properties and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have also been issued for later this week in areas within SA and NSW, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, bringing blazing heat to a broad swath of the region.

The mix of extremely dry land and unbroken high temperatures presents a volatile scenario for firefighters.

Worldwide Climatic Events Cause Chaos

Elsewhere, a metropolis was plunged into blackout recently after strong winds damaged the city’s electrical network, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables. The weather conditions also led to major transport delays at a key airport, where numerous flights were cancelled. Substantial damage to power systems is expected to cause further issues as service providers work urgently to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Mist Blankets Sunny Area

At the same time, a valley famed for its sunny weather and abundant sunshine has endured one of its dullest and most overcast periods on recorded history. A specific type of low cloud, which usually lasts for only a short time, has been unusually extensive and persistent this year, holding the mercury at a key transport hub below 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades. The prolonged fog has been driven by exceptional autumn rainfall that left soils waterlogged.

Severe Weather Brings Snow to Holiday Islands

Turning to Spain, a powerful storm has ushered in heavy rain, powerful winds and even snow to a group of islands – weather many would not associate with this popular tourist spot. While snow is not unknown at elevated areas, the storm delivered some of the heaviest snow depths in 2016 to a national park, forcing its closure.

Alongside the snow, strong northerly winds buffeted the island chain, with gusts reaching 50mph observed on multiple locations. The influence of the weather event is forecast to diminish this week with more typical weather returning.
