Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at Educational Institution in Nigeria

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.

The gang of attackers breached the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, authorities reported.

The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their hostel, an official report indicated.

An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.

The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.

In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.
