Fury Surges as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Backlash

Figures from both sides of the political spectrum and the Hollywood world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Post

After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Developments and Arrest

Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant sum.

A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures

The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.

“What a disgusting and despicable statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced previous comments from Trump about political violence, asking, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a sick man."

Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying the Reiners caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."

Criticism from His Own Political Ranks

A number of GOP elected officials also voiced dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared members in his party to justify the statements.

The Director's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump return to power.

"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."

Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the shooting of another political figure.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
