Gareth Southgate Shares Priorities on Mentoring Young People Rather than Returning to Coaching

Gareth Southgate has declared that he is avoiding a comeback in football management, explaining that it would be difficult to recreate the unique sense of purpose he experienced as England’s manager.

The former coach suggested his intention to dedicate his efforts toward working with young people and addressing what he labeled a pervasive negative narrative presently found in the country.

Embracing New Avenues Beyond The Sport

During a broadcast discussion, the manager was prompted regarding rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the Premier League and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Commitment to Positive Examples

Ahead of the publication of his new title, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, the author emphasized that he is “very passionate” about providing role models for teenagers, utilizing lessons from his time as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

The leader maintains that his time managing the squad, during which the team evolved from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds broader applications.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he noted. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he remarked: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He continued: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Conflict

He asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often emphasizes division.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he stated. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

His new release, Dear England, is set to present deeper reflections on guidance and national identity based on his remarkable professional journey.
