Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the events before the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
