The leadership board of the iconic performing arts venue has voted to adopt a new name the Trump-Kennedy Center, according to a statement from the White House.

White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated on social media that the board's decision was unanimous, citing "the tremendous efforts President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building."

"This will be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt attain new levels of success and grandeur," Leavitt added.

The intended name change is shaping up as deeply divisive, particularly in Washington, D.C., where the center has served as an iconic landmark since its completion and dedication for President John F. Kennedy.

Recent History of the Center

Soon after beginning his term, President Donald Trump replaced all the center's incumbent trustees and appointed supporters in their place. The freshly appointed board later moved to name Trump the chairman.

The president later secured approximately $257 million in federal funds to finance significant upgrades and operational expenses at the historic venue.

Historical Roots

The concept for a national performing arts center originated in the 1950s. Following the tragic death of President John F. Kennedy, the 35th president, in 1963, the future venue was named in his honor.
