Liverpool's Captain Concedes Team is in a Mess, Questions Players on Accountability

Virgil van Dijk has delivered a scathing assessment of Liverpool's woeful title defence, confessing the title holders are in disarray and letting down head coach Slot while questioning whether all squad members is taking responsibility for the team’s slump.

“There was a great build-up to the match but in a fixture you are dealing with facts and the truth is we conceded a set piece in the opening period and a terrible goal at the start of the second half,” stated the defender. “We are certainly letting him down, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. You look at yourself first and then you help each other, you work together to escape of this mess because at the present time it is a mess – that’s just a fact.

Van Dijk’s Demands: Take Responsibility

Van Dijk typically addresses the media after a game as part of his role as Liverpool captain. This time was distinct, however. Call for Unity

The Dutchman added: “This season we lack any steady form, we concede excessive scores, we are losing battles and everyone is responsible for it and I hope everyone sees that. We have to take responsibility to reverse the situation and tempting to point fingers but unity is essential. We have been through it together and won the league and everyone was part of it, and during a tough time you must remain united and not point fingers.

“You have to be a man and face the toughness and persist, again and again because if you want to give up then you are in the wrong environment in my view, because this club has been enduring many adversity over recent seasons and we’ve always come out of it. However, that doesn't imply it is straightforward, it’s exhausting but there is only one path forward.”

Next up in the Premier League is a trip to West Ham next Sunday, after the Champions League fixture of the Dutch side in the European competition. He said: “The next game is another game so what am I going to do, go home and cry? Certainly not, I'll return and try to think how we can turn this around and hopefully that is the collective focus as well.”
