McLaren's Lando Norris Wins Maiden Formula One World Championship in Yas Marina In Spite Of Max Verstappen's Grand Prix Win.

Through an exhibition of brave driving, the McLaren driver has won his maiden Formula One world championship by achieving P3 at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. He secured his success with ruthless precision to take the crown that had been so close but remained just out of grasp as McLaren found themselves floundering at the last two rounds. These included a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an egregious strategy call in Qatar.

It showed the McLarens were free to race, but put Norris under pressure from the Charles Leclerc. Early pit stops saw Norris emerge in midfield traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and displayed no signs of nerves in his race craft.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to overtake two cars in one swoop, moving up to fourth and catching Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull instructed their driver to delay Norris, which resulted in a dramatic overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside, nearly completely off the track.

This moment was looked at by the stewards, with several impossibly tense laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This bold move unimpeded was crucial to his title fight.

Diverging Fortunes

While Norris became the first Briton to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in fortunes between the two was stark. As the young guns battled over the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing conclusion to a difficult season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Italian team had been greeted with enthusiasm but produced what was easily his most challenging year ever, ending up sixth in the championship without a podium. He has looked weary in the closing races and will aim to reset over the winter.
