Waiting twenty years for another chance to snaffle a prized business acquisition is a privilege not afforded to many executives. The Rothermere family, though, takes a more patient stance to time.
Whereas the majority of corporate boards create five-year plans, the Rothermeres, having built a formidable media conglomerate over more than a century, are accustomed to planning in terms of generations.
It was in the summer of 2004 that the 4th Viscount Rothermere, the tall, curly haired owner of the Daily Mail, was unsuccessful in his attempt to purchase the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.
In his view, the failure pleased Rupert Murdoch because it would have established a stable of conservative newspapers influential enough to rival the “unique political leverage” of his publications.
The reserved Rothermere, however, was able to play a longer game. The Telegraph titles were once again offered for sale in 2023. From that point, two potential buyers have come and gone, both after staff rebellions over their suitability. Rothermere has now made his move.
In the process, the 57-year-old has reinforced his family’s obsession with UK press, after his forebears bought, sold and smashed together some of the most prominent publications of their era.
“Lord Rothermere has got a business head, but he’s not sharply business minded,” said a media analyst. “It may sound sentimental, but his dedication to journalism is authentic.” “I believe they have long aimed to consolidate media outlets catering to centre-right readers.”
Significant challenges remain before the nobleman’s corporate entity can clinch the publications. In addition to competition and media plurality concerns, Telegraph insiders are questioning how he will stump up the half-billion-pound price tag. However, Rothermere’s hopes of creating a conservative media powerhouse have been rekindled.
It was a bold bid for a proprietor who prides himself on remaining out of the public eye, often noting his readiness to let the pugnacious views of the Daily Mail differ from his own gentler, more pro-European conservatism.
With the Rothermeres, though, media acquisitions are a dynastic tradition. A portrait of Alfred Harmsworth, his great-great-uncle who founded the Daily Mail in 1896, adorns Rothermere’s office. One of his earliest memories was of his father, Vere, bringing him to the hot-metal newspaper presses.
A young Jonathan would be involved in discussions about the difficult start for the Mail on Sunday in 1982. He recalls the stress of the vicious battle in 1987 between the London Daily News and his family’s Evening Standard, which he later sold.
He personally flirted with journalism, working as a editorial staffer on the Sunday Mail in Scotland, before focusing on the commercial operations of his dynastic empire. When his father died in 1998, Rothermere is said to have had about 20 minutes upon arriving back from the hospital before company calls began, effectively commencing his leadership of DMGT, aged 30.
In the past, he divested profitable parts of the business to refocus on the Mail and additional press holdings. The Telegraph bid is the most recent indication of his eagerness to consolidate the dynastic press dominance. “This is a 20-year plus target acquisition,” commented a ex-staffer. “He doesn’t want the Mail as the only newspaper asset he leaves for his son Vere.”
Rothermere’s decision to take DMGT private in 2021 has also made the Telegraph pursuit easier. “I don’t have to justify myself to anybody,” he remarked soon after the move.
Attempting to alter the Telegraph’s editorial line would be uncharacteristic. An ex-editor informed that neither Rothermere nor his father meddled in content.
“That is the main reason why I turned down very enticing offers to edit the Times and the Telegraph,” he stated. “Frankly, I simply didn’t believe that other proprietors would give me that freedom. It’s difficult to overstate how valuable that freedom is to an editor.”
He continued, “Fleet Street is littered with the corpses of sacked editors who, amid crashing circulations, tried to please their proprietors rather than their readers. The Rothermeres have always understood that. It’s a sacred principle for them that editors are given total editorial autonomy, with the brutally clear understanding that they are dismissed if they produce poor papers.”
With British politics appearing to shift to the conservative side, there are inevitable political concerns about uniting the Mail and Telegraph at a time when both have been increasing reporting of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.
Many liberal politicians contend the Mail’s combative tone has become more pronounced in recent times, citing its promotion of talking points pushed by Farage on migration and the “progressive” agenda. Others argue the Telegraph has experienced an more extreme transformation, often running radical-right opinion pieces that exceed those of the Mail.
There are numerous questions about how someone even with Rothermere’s assets has the cash. Most media analysts believe that a more representative price tag for the publications is in the range of £350m, but Rothermere is prepared to pay a premium.
The company lacks a available ÂŁ500m, the sum reportedly demanded by the current holders as they seek to recoup the debt that secured ownership of the assets two years ago.
Rothermere has promised to maintain the Telegraph and Mail titles editorially separate, viewing them as serving distinct readerships – quality and popular press. Nonetheless, there are apprehensions within both publications over reductions and the longer-term plans, given the state of the newspaper industry.
Again, the dynasty has shown a readiness to take drastic action when required. When Rothermere’s father was trying to rescue an ailing Daily Mail in 1971, he merged it with the Daily Sketch, dismissing hundreds of journalists in the aftermath.
The culture secretary has requested that DMGT and the current owners present the intended acquisition to the government within three weeks, but the outstanding issues will mean the saga rumbles on well into next year.
“A company that owns the Mail and the Telegraph would have the scale to give both papers a better chance of surviving,” said a former editor. “But, even then, such a company would be a pygmy compared to the giant internet platforms and the BBC from whom most people today get their news.”
His eldest son, 31, Rothermere’s eldest son, is already being groomed to assume leadership of the dynastic holdings, occupying a key position in DMGT’s media business. If his duties will include control of the Telegraph is the next great chapter in the family's press narrative.
