NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.

"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will continue to reside within me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

Yet his critics, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he came from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his modest Astoria home.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
