Alright, what did you think of 2025 in your family? Could it be described as all as good as one might claim on social media? Packed with academic success for the children and riotous themed fancy dress gatherings for the adults? Or was it a ocean of frustration with only occasional enjoyable flotsam? And was any of it authentic, or is everyone now seven-fingered virtual entities with celebrity teeth?
I've corralled my thoughts together, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the paramount thing in any given year: what titles we were obsessed with the most. Without further ado:
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
On her phone, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "trying to find reasonable healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In real life."
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I suggested it. Fair enough.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into drama school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her avatar has a successful utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her older sibling has outside the game.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and ended it at 82%. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Minecraft
Any time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a persistent critic. When he protests, I reply that I am behaving this way to build character so he can grow up and play games for mature audiences. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is unstoppable. Superior than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted card game digital pastime, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that frequently update their range is you wake up one day and realise it is all just an attempt to lure you into compulsion-based microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a iconic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could deal with my issues so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I'm unwilling to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just was short on the focused attention to give it what it needed earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the early morning after evening drinks.
Balatro
I know Balatro was the previous year's sleeper hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is incredible. It just gets every single thing right. The core concept is a fantastic concept, but the powers behind the different joker cards are so imaginative it has become a game I could play any time. Combine that with the charm of the card design, and this is an true high-water mark of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a minor pile-on when I wrote about how a specific bug in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of art, sound, acting – which I appreciated even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the individual who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I share that verbatim, because I appreciate the effort, and they are obviously an astute judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a bastard-hard exploration-focused thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". How delightful. I understand that it looks ace and is perfection if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my mid-fifties. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was okay when I was a kid, but so was many less comfortable things.
Close call between business deals that sparked debate, and premium pricing. Both ethically dubious and concerning.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names shouted from the doorstep at bedtime.
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or doomscrolling, but it burns like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the past.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the end of days.
The Witcher 4.
