The creative mastermind never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series coming to an end—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
One could easily to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
Considering the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
