The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of the state is experiencing drought conditions. This landmark event comes on the heels of challenging years marked by below-average rain that worsened blaze threats and strained its massive agricultural sector.

A Chart Indicates No Abnormally Dry Areas

The latest assessment from the national drought tracker confirmed that all of California is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This shift resulted from weeks of above-normal rainfall that replenished key lakes like Oroville and Shasta well above their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a weather expert.

After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons

Achieving this status involved powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and tragic losses. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Even into late December, regions like northeastern California were still classified as unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average

Yet, hydrologists note that the end of drought status should not be confused with being out of the woods. Current readings of the high-elevation snow place it at approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This frozen reservoir, which provides approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it runs off, is a critical factor for future water availability. Hydrology managers point out that it is too early to make predictions for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

While the drought map is entirely green, the focus now shifts to sustaining this precious water balance during the coming seasons.
