The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
