While Swimmers Fled Danger, Widely-Shared Picture Depicts Rescuer Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her personal space. On a recent weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected loud noises reverberating through the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw told her something was wrong.

While standing on the road, talking to a pair who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she became aware of someone coming up behind her. It was a lifeguard, running at full speed towards Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one heading in the path that the crowd was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and barefoot … He was sprinting into something that undoubtedly every part of you would signal you to go in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely pedal to the metal racing.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Crisis

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of valour in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, law enforcement and medical teams treating dozens of those hurt.

Community Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the patrol base next to the site of the incident becoming a makeshift treatment center. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen taking action, including going into the surf to assist people who were struggling.

Following the events, comments of gratitude circulated widely. One post expressed gratitude for the lifeguards who showed that “compassion will always overcome evil”.

The squad of rescuers issued a statement, noting they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your kind messages and solidarity. We are touched by the compassion shown towards our team,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the aim that it supports those involved.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many permanent lifeguards, stated that the team rose to the occasion from the instant the violence commenced until late that evening.

“We have heard so many emotional accounts, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” commented a local official.

“The team demonstrate altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous coastlines protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on that day should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and grapple with the atrocity of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we consider just how much good we have witnessed in the presence of such hatred.”
